Breese Architects and Tamara Weiss have been collaborating since last summer on the renovation of a Chilmark home on Martha’s Vineyard.
Builder, Mark Hurwitz, broke ground on the 1,000 square foot addition last September and the fast track project is nearing completion. What started as a kitchen renovation continued to evolve and over a period of months became a whole house face lift including incredible architecture and all new interiors. Adding yet another level of interesting details, the house now features reclaimed, reused, found and recycled materials and objects.
Some of those items are pictured here. Timbers from an old barn in Vermont, a column with incredible carvings from India, a lovely piece of ironwork for the second floor landing and old flooring which adds warmth and texture to the new space. The island, sure to become a focal point in this wonderful family gathering space, is made from wood used in another house in a different time and will soon get a distressed zinc top. Just the right touch for this big kitchen/great room.
The owners love to cook, entertain and spend time with their extended family around them as they enjoy big lively meals. The new kitchen, which has lots of cooking, storage and gathering space, should fit that bill with style.
The addition includes a new entry, a whole new South Elevation featuring an entire wall of windows with amazing water views, a beautiful garapa deck that flows from inside to outside with ease and a staircase to connect the two floors of the house more conveniently. The work will be done sometime in June and we’ll put up new images as construction continues to forge ahead. Keep checking back for updates and details!
